I suspect that most users would prefer wind-up portable ether-communicators to coal-fired since the latter have an unfortunate tendency to ignite clothing. Although, who knows what advances in textiles may occur.
But I think what Steampunk Evil Spock will really appreciate are going to be the steam-powered agonizers.
What would WIRED Magazine be like in a Steampunk Universe?
Would Evil Spock's cell phone be powered by steam? How much coal would Evil Spock have to heft for a 5 min. phone call?
